WEDNESDAY 15 MARCH

Tokyo

Aboard a Qantas flight from Australia (air inclusive package) you’ll arrive this evening. Driven to the modern Mandarin Oriental Tokyo there’s time to unwind from your flight before retiring for the night. (Sydney guests travelling on the air inclusive package arrive this morning and have a free day in Tokyo – your room is reserved from the previous night and is available to you immediately on arrival).

Tokyo

Join your fellow travellers and Constellation Journey Leaders to explore the fascinating neighbourhoods and sights of Tokyo. From the tranquillity and reverence of the Meiji Shrine to the thriving retail centre at Ginza you begin to understand how 14 million people live together in a harmonious structure of peace and respect.


Feel the frenetic pace of the city in its Sibuya District before passing by the Imperial Palace Plaza. The much photographed Senso-ji Buddhist Temple is our next stop. 


At a welcome dinner this evening you’ll have the opportunity to get to know your journey leaders and fellow travellers.

Tokyo

Today choose from two ‘A La Carte’ options:


Travel to Kamakura for a private Noh Theatre performance. Continue on to lunch at an old Japanese villa before learning how to make Wagashi Sweets – the colourful confection taken with green tea. Before returning to Tokyo you stop at a traditional Shinto Shrine.


Leave the hustle and bustle for a day trip to the mountainous town of Hakone. Stroll around the Open Air Museum and soak up the incredible landscapes, including the remarkable Hakonejinja shrine rising from the lake.


Tonight  you may choose from a selection of restaurants at the hotel or join the Constellation team for dinner at a local restaurant.

Tokyo to Noto Peninsula

This morning we board the Shinkansen Bullet Train to Kanazawa before tackling the Chirinhama Nagisa Driveway, a sandy stretch of road that allows vehicles to traverse the eight kilometre stretch.


We continue along the Noto Peninsula to the hot-spring resort town of Wakura-Onsen. Experience a night of traditional Japanese hospitality at the Kagaya Ryokan. Soothe your spirit in a choice of onsen (hot spring pools) at our hotel – both indoor and outdoor.

Noto Peninsula

This morning we visit the open air morning market, a great way to immerse yourself in Japanese culture. There’s also an opportunity to visit the Waijima Lacquerware workshop, where the highest quality lacquerware goods are produced by masters. Two of Japanese most popular exports – sushi and sake – will be offered at an  exclusive tasting at a local sake brewery, as well as an oyster farming experience with local fishermen.
Later we drive to Kanazawa for three nights at the Hyatt Centric.

MONDAY 20 MARCH

Kanazawa

Today is devoted to exploring the enormous array of cultural treasures within Kanazawa.


Visit Omicho Market, the city’s premier food market since 1721. Then become acquainted with samurai culture through an exploration of the former Samurai House District, step inside one of the residences for a view into the former samurai world. For a more modern take on Japanese culture we’ll head to the city’s museum for contemporary art.


Later, a visit to Kenrouken Garden shows why it is commonly in the Top 3 list for gardens in Japan. Return to your hotel after strolling the geisha district of Higashi Chayagai.


A special dinner this evening celebrates the traditions of Japanese Geishas.
 

TUESDAY 21 MARCH

Shirakawago and Gokayama

Today we get closer to what traditional Japanese life was like. The World Heritage Site of Shirakawago and nearby Gokayama contain living examples of Japanese traditions. They are made up of Gassho-zukuri (translated to ‘constructed like hands in prayer’) buildings, where people continue to live the traditional way of life.


For dinner this evening you may like to dine at our hotel or join the Constellation team at a local restaurant.

Tokyo

The Shinkansen Bullet Train covers the 300km distance to Tokyo in under three hours, leaving plenty of time this afternoon to continue your discovery of this energising city.


With neon billboards ablaze on every building, it’s hard to escape the fact you are in the electronics shopping district of Akihabara District. Onto the Ueno District we visit the Ameyoko Street Market. From the market based stalls of Ameyoko to the country’s premier shopping district of Ginza, where luxury boutiques beckon, brings another area of Tokyo to explore.
Our home this evening is the Intercontinental Pier 8 in Yokohoma.  Enjoy fine dining in our hotel this evening.

Join Oceania Nautica

Your discovery of Tokyo is not yet over. This morning we ascend the 333m Tokyo Tower.. We continue to encounter the architectural feats of Tokyo, crossing the almost one kilometre long suspension Rainbow Bridge to Odaiba, a high tech entertainment hub on an artificial island.


This afternoon it’s time to step aboard our luxury ship, the Oceania Nautica. Settle into your spacious stateroom or suite before joining the fellow travellers for a pre dinner cocktail or glass of bubbles before sailing out to discover Japan’s stunning coastal areas.

Nagoya

Perched in the centre of the city is the 17th century Nagoya Castle. Pride of the people, the castle’s golden orca statues are a symbol of the city. Today, and on every day ashore, you may choose how you wish to experience the region. Constellation Journeys includes a wide variety of shore excursions to select from, which means you aren’t forced into wasting your time on activities you are not interested in.

Kyoto, Kobe & Osaka

An early lunch is served aboard, giving you plenty of time to make the most of an afternoon ashore.
Kobe is your gateway to Kyoto, Nara, Osaka and more. Staying aboard Oceania Nautica overnight in this region will enable to you to take full advantage of the many options available.


Kyoto clings to the past in a way that other Japanese cities have let go – making it all the more appealing. Over 2000 temples and shrines give way to robed monks, ornate gardens and geisha on their way from one tea house to the next.


Nara is the cradle of Japanese arts, literature and crafts – with its magnificent shrines and temples that predate Kyoto’s.
Osaka is home to Osaka Castle, one of the country’s best recognised landmarks. And in Kobe you’ll find Himeji Castle, a structure built entirely of wood and tile.

Busan, South Korea

From trendy cafes and famous fish markets to sacred temples and traditional tea ceremonies, Busan, the second largest city in South Korea, is bursting with flavours and culture.

Choose your own adventure today – take a walk in the relaxing Yongdusan Park while admiring the various species of trees and partake in a tea ceremony. At the Haedong Yonggungsa you’ll witness one of the three sites sacred to the Goddess of Buddha.

Or select from other options including a visit to the Fish Market and a cultural performance.

Nagasaki

Nagasaki has risen from the ashes of atomic bomb devastation and bloomed into a charming and peaceful city. Today we discover the remnants of old Nagasaki beside the modern city.

Hososhima

Sailing along the southern side of the Japanese island of Kyushu eyes are drawn to the natural beauty along the coastline. Explore the historic Hyuga area, exhibiting great examples of 19th century Japanese architecture.


Today you can stay and explore Hososhima or take to the once thriving, now wonderfully preserved town of Mimitsu. Back aboard the ship make your selection for dinner – will it be Italian, French, seafood or something else altogether?

Kochi

Leave your preconceptions of Japanese cities aboard the ship, Kochi defies expectations. A compact city with a reputation for being laid-back and fun, Kochi also has an outstanding reputation for its cuisine and shopping arcades.

Mt Fuji rises like a giant behind the beautiful seaside city of Shimizu. How will you experience this city?
