HIGHLIGHTS

Martin Kers (Moscow)

MOSCOW

Ramble across the cobblestones of history and relive the life of revolutions and royalty, Red Square and the brightly coloured spires of St Basil’s Cathedral are more magnificent than you can imagine.

Lake Baikal

LAKE BAIKAL

Landscapes of astounding beauty wash past as the train hugs tightly to the cliff. Looking up to snow-capped peaks and down to idyllic lake vistas it feels like this area has been lifted from poem and transplanted in the most surprising of locations.

Kazan

KAZAN

Throw in a pinch of Europe, a teaspoon of Asia and a good measure of Istanbul’s vibe and you’ll come closer to understanding Kazan, whose name means “cooking pot”.

Ulaan Baatar - Sükhbaatar

ULAN BATAAR

The hypnotic chanting of hundreds of monks fills the air, spiriting you away to a place without time, to “the great place of complete joy” – the site of Mongolia’s most important monastery.

YEKATERINBURG

Unsure whether you’re in Asia, Europe or another world altogether, you’ll come face to face with the turmoil of Russia’s 100 year past – from the execution of the Romanovs to the rise of the nation’s first president.

Vladivostok

VLADIVOSTOK

Closer to Beijing and Tokyo than Moscow you’ll find one of Russia’s greatest displays of military might, more than mildly intended to intimidate the nation’s neighbours. But Vladivostok is also a display of natural beauty and striking architecture.
